33 Nominations for the Thirteenth Round of the Pro Futura Scientia Programme

To the thirteenth round of the Pro Futura Scientia Programme, a total of 33 candidates
have been nominated by 16 universities in five countries. Not only have nominations been
received from twelve Swedish universities this time, but also from the Universities of
Cambridge, Copenhagen, Tartu and Turku. 17 women and 16 men are among the nominees,
who are now competing for the Pro Futura XIII Fellowships.

As in previous years, the nominated scholars represent a wide variety of subjects within
the human and social sciences. Researchers working interdisciplinary, e.g. touching upon
the natural and medical sciences, are also among the proposed candidates.

The nominating universities are encouraged to propose researchers not only from their own
university but also from other universities and/or countries, but with an intended future
association with the nominating university. Each university may nominate up to four candidates,
two of whom must come from another university in Sweden or abroad. In this round, the
nominated candidates are affiliated to a total of 27 different universities/research institutes/
organizations in nine countries. In addition to affiliations in the five countries of the nominating
universities, there are affiliations also in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States.

The Pro Futura Scientia Programme for early career scholars aims at providing optimal conditions
for promising scholars in the humanities and social sciences and to give them the chance to pursue
curiosity-driven research. The programme was set up in 1999 by the Swedish Collegium for
Advanced Study (SCAS) and Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (the Swedish Foundation for Humanities
and Social Sciences; RJ). The programme provides an attractive career path, and those researchers
who have attended the programme in the past have come to play an increasingly important role in
the Swedish university and research system.

After the usual extensive selection process, some 15 per cent of the nominees will eventually be
admitted to the programme. The final decision regarding the appointment of the Pro Futura XIII
Fellows is expected to be made in the early summer of 2018.
